Mom's birthday tradition is a regifting of Emma (for six of the past 7 years - the original birthday gift was in year one). This year's twist was the addition of a hot dog costume as the wrapping. Oh, the indignity of it all.....

Emma: Seriously, Mom? Is this what you really want for your birthday this year?

Emma: Well, ok, then. I don't really mind. It's going to be quite a warm winter coat for me this year, especially as it's a bit on the large side.

See? I can run in it and everything.

Luna: Are you sure you're ok with this, Emma?

Emma: Sure, it's not so bad. Michael and Tania wanted Mom to have an opportunity to embarrass us on the blog. That's not a bad birthday gift, right?

Emma: Look! I can fetch sticks as a hot dog.

Emma: I bet Topper wants to try on my new costume.

Topper: I hope they don't try to put that thing on me.

Topper: What????? How did this happen??? One moment I'm running free as a jay bird, and the next I'm wrapped up like a wiener dog. No fair!

Luna: I really am not happy about this at all. Topper looks much, MUCH better than I do in this outfit. The beige clashes with my weimar-wiener coloring.

Steve: What big babies! I'll wear the costume and show you how it's done.

Taking Topper for a walk usually involves a run as well. Topper and Luna got some exercise yesterday. Now that the "pups" are a year old, our walks are really a lot of fun. Topper, especially, loves to go for walks. He puts his nose to the ground and explores the neighborhood.

There was something compelling about the Everything New York Bagel I brought home from New York City. I've never seen the dogs go crazy about any food item before, but they really, REALLY! wanted this bagel.

Poor Steve didn't stand a chance. His arm was just barely long enough to keep Emma from snagging it. I was amazed that she climbed up on the back of the chair. She usually reserves that kind of focus for a dog toy.

My Sunday morning routine is to make a cup of coffee and then sit in my comfy chair to read the paper. Usually all three dogs are vying for attention and want to sit in my lap at the same time. It makes the first few sections of the paper pretty tough to read. After a while, though, the dogs find something else to do (usually involving some begging for food in the kitchen when someone else is fixing their breakfast). By the time I get to the comics section, Luna has my lap to herself. I think it's a clever strategy.

Mom is away to South Africa to do a field season there. She's collecting a little-known parasitic plant. Hmmmmmm! She's also visiting other doggies. There's a rumor that she petted a miniature dachshund puppy - not fair!

This is the plant she's working on - at least one of the new species she's to describe soon.

Hummpf! This is a border collie who went with her to the dune field where this new plant occurs. Her name is Elsie.

Walking three dachshunds at once

Now that Luna and Topper are five months old, it's time to get them out to walk as often as possible. We introduced them to the leash one at a time a couple of months ago, with just some walks up and down the driveway and along the sidewalk in front of the house. Then we had each of the puppies walk with Emma as a side-by-side, then the puppies together, and then, finally, all three at the same time. Topper is always eager to go, no matter what time of day it is. Emma loves to go for walks, but usually she wants to go when it's very cool and not much humidity in the air. Luna always acts as if she's being punished when the harness and leash are brought out. She is reluctant for the first block and then really gets into it. I'm hoping she'll start to look forward to walkies as much as Topper does. I only have to mention "walk" when he's around and he's goes hyper. Oh, wait a minute, he does that all the time. . .

At first, each of the dogs were on their own leads with one person handling a dog. Next, it was time to try two together with one person while the other dog was on another lead with a different person. That was an experiment that was interesting. Whoever was behind had to deal with a dog pulling on the lead to be up front with the pack, and the person in front had to drag at least one dog along, because whichever dog was behind from the front group wanted to walk with the dog walking with the second person.

This past weekend we bought a duo lead with a four foot strap. We tried every combo: Emma and Luna on the duo lead; Emma and Topper on the duo lead; and Luna and Topper on the duo lead. It works best for Luna and Topper to be together with Emma on her own lead. Steve and I walked them together for the first couple of times and then, a few days ago, I started taking the dogs out on my own.

What an experience it is to have three dachshunds walking at heel! It's quite a sight and it's quite a lot of fun, especially with the neighborhood distractions. Every time a rabbit trail is picked up, or a squirrel/cat/bird/bicyclist/pedestrian/other dog is spotted, it's like walking a thirty pound dog with three heads and 12 legs, each going in a different direction. It doesn't take much effort to bring them into line again, especially with the harnesses the pups are using. I can pick both up with one hand and look them in the eye to let them know what is not acceptable behavior. I usually get a duo kiss from them in apology if they've been rude. Fortunately, they are becoming very polite walkers and are very curious about the neighborhood.

Emma: Amateurs! I have the rabbit trail, and I have years of experience. I'll catch the rabbit.

Luna: No way, Emma - this is my game. I get to catch the rabbit! I call dibs!

Luna: Geez. I don't know why those two can't let me win this game. I told Mom that I would catch a rabbit for her.

Topper: I'll have an advantage from up here. Not only do I have a superior nose, but I can see the whole yard from here.

Emma: Those two rookies wouldn't know a rabbit if it bit them in the behind!

Topper: Hey! I heard that!

Topper and Luna: Maybe the rabbit escaped through the fence. We better bark up a storm so the neighbor knows to leave it alone.

Luna: I bet it's hiding in the bushes. I better go check it out before Topper gets that idea.

Topper: Bwaaahaaaaahaaaahaaa - beat you to it, Luna!

Luna: I smell a rabbit! I just know it's hiding up here in the weeds.

Topper: Maybe Luna's on to something. I sure hope she doesn't find the rabbit. I want to catch it.

Luna: humph! It wasn't up in the weeds, and it's not in the yard. I think it's time to take a rest in the shade.

Topper: Ok, Luna - I'll keep a lookout for the rabbit. Why don't you take a nap while you're at it? I'll wake you up if I see the rabbit.

Emma: Forget the rabbit - there's a squirrel in the tree. Oooooh! Squirrel!

Emma, Topper, Luna: Yay! Squirrel! Where's the squirrel?

Emma: Forget it. It's way too hot to go chasing squirrels. I think I'll stand here and look pathetic until someone goes and gets me a treat.

In the yard again - what a relief!

Luna and Topper visited the vet today to have stitches removed. Topper had been feeling pretty well since sometime last weekend and so we had been letting him play in the yard. Luna started to feel pretty good by this past Wednesday and so was very frustrated by having to be on a leash in the yard. So, the first thing we did when we got home was to let Luna play in the yard for as long as she wanted to.

The first thing she did was to run after Topper and try to take the sticks and plants he grabbed.

Luna: give it to me! You've had a week in the yard without me!

Topper: Ok - you can have the weed. I HAVE A STICK!

Luna: Must have stick!

Luna: Ok - not the same stick, but it's a stick and it feels so nice on my gums. I'm still teething, you know. I'm a snaggle tooth pup!

Topper: Now what does she have? I may just have to go chase her again.

Luna: I get to run, run, run! I missed running. See Luna run. Run, Luna, run!

Luna: Now what does Topper have? I may have to go chase him again.

Topper: If I just sit here and look bored I know I can drive Luna crazy. She just can't stand it!

Topper: OW! I didn't mean to tease you. Geez! Some dogs just can't take a joke.

Emma: Now's my chance. The puppies are busy and so I can go chase the baby bunnies by myself.

Topper: What's Emma doing? Is she going after the baby bunnies again?

Topper: Emma! Chase one out this way. I'm ready!

Luna: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! I've been smelling the bunny tracks all week and have not been able to chase one.

Luna: Emma! Chase one over here! I'm ready for it!

Emma: snicker, snicker, snicker. . . I'm going to drive them mad by ignoring them and rolling in some worm poo. Worm poo - it does wonders for the hair. Don't you love my lovely comb over?

Emma: can't resist the smell of bunnies. I know they're in here. Come out, come out, wherever you are!

Emma: I think I'll just wait here for the puppies to come over and then we'll bark into the hole and chase the bunnies out.

Help! I'm at the bottom of a dachshund pile. All three are on my lap and Topper keeps trapping my hands so I can't type. Emma is on her back, Luna is curled up in the prime lap spot, and Topper has squeezed between my computer and the arm of the chair.

I've a new definition of happiness. . . .

Update on the puppies

Luna and Topper are both doing very well after their surgeries. In fact, Topper is doing so well that it's hard to follow doc's orders to keep him from running and jumping. He simply doesn't seem to be affected by the stitches at all. We are keeping him on a leash in the yard, but indoors he's just plain ol' Topper as usual. He's having a really hard time figuring out why he's getting in trouble for trying to wrestle with Luna.

Luna is not quite as chipper, but, then, she had a relatively long incision and has staples in addition to the sutures. She's resting more than Topper, but doesn't seem to be too bothered about the stitches and staples for now. She doesn't want to wrestle, though, which makes Topper bark a lot.

Both are on pain meds until next week some time.

Transition day

Today is a big day for Luna and Topper. They are currently at the veterinarian's office for their "transitions" to adulthood. Translation: Topper is being neutered and Luna is being spayed.

Topper: Do you really have to take them? I mean, don't you think you should pass the genes for this mug on to the next generation of dachshunds?????

Luna: Spayed? What does that mean? Does it mean someone takes a shovel and goes after my innards? Hey! I don't like the sound of that at all!

Luna and Topper: Maybe if we take a nap, it will all go away. Maybe it's all a bad dream.

Emma: Don't worry Topper, it's really not all that bad. I don't even remember it.

Topper: But you're a girl. It's just not the same. No one can tell they've neutered you. I'm losing the family jewels!

I miss my puppies. I want them to come home soon!

Worldwide Puppy Wrestling Federation

In the other corner, Topper - Luna's little brother; a chocolate and tan miniature dachshund puppy weighing in at 7.5 lbs. His main goal in life thus far is to achieve world domination and to take over every warm lap in the household.

Referee Emma gives the rules of the match.

"There will be no spitting, tickling, or biting of sensitive body parts! I want a clean match and no excessive drama out there."

Emma:

"Follow me to the wrasslin' grass and stay in your corners until I call you in to play."

Topper:

I'm gonna win this match, I just know it! I have a few tricks up my sleeve that will catch Luna off guard.

Luna:

Bring it on, Topper. I can whip your butt!

Emma:

I don't know why they insist on this every single day. When are they going to outgrow this stage of life? Puppies! Sigh.

Luna:

Must warm up! Run, Luna, run!

Topper:

Oh yeah? Well, I'm faster and smarter and better looking than Luna, at least in my own mind, that is.

Luna:

Luna was playing outside in the rain last Sunday. The big splotchy drops made her look like a dapple, rather than an Isabella and Tan dachshund. She was very curious about the big lens and flash I was using to take her picture. I love how intently she studies everything that is new to her.

Jingle-jangles

One of the things that keeps all the backyard critters a bit ahead of Emma's hunting prowess is her set of jingly collar tags. Emma likes having her collar put on in the morning - it seems to define the start of her day.

Luna and Topper received their first piece of jewelry this week after getting their rabies vaccinations. Luna acts as if her new jewelry makes her more grown up and dignified.

Topper gets a bit distracted by the shiny tag and tries to play with it. Have I mentioned that Topper is the embodiment of T-I-double Guh-R, ala Tigger of Winnie-the Pooh? He's bouncy, trouncy, and fun-fun-fun! It got him into trouble last night, though, since he would not settle down for bedtime. I had to hold him tight in my arms and softly stroke him until he became drowsy.

Luna and Topper had their 12 week check-up today. Topper weighs 7.5 lbs, Luna weighs 7.6 lbs. Both are very healthy and happy and have become totally integrated into Emma's pack. They love their big sister and she adores them. It's so much fun to watch them all play together, and to hear the pitter patter of dachshund paws running across hardwood floors. We've had a few stampedes this week that made me laugh out loud. We're soooooo lucky to have these puppies and Emma in the same house.

Emma: Oh, oh - they're up to something again. I wonder if I should go tell Mom?

Topper: See? Emma's taking a nap, she didn't tell on us at all. Let's dig!

Settling in with new puppies

As you could probably tell from the May 10, 2010 posting, Emma was less than thrilled to have puppies invading her space. It took about three days for her to "get over it," so to speak. On day 2 she was starting to make some play overtures. Topper took her up on it, but Luna was too intimidated to play with the big scary Emma. Day three was the breakthrough day for the Wolfe pack. Emma not only started playing in earnest, but she also allowed Topper and Luna to crawl over her and to sleep on her. This is a typical morning scene for us while I'm drinking my first cup of coffee. Topper usually crawls up on my lap first, followed by Luna and then Emma makes herself at home in her usual spot. Sometimes Emma claims the spot first and then Topper or Luna, or both, crawl(s) over her to reach the comfy snooze zone.

I've been socializing both puppies on separate days by taking them with me to my museum office. I'm working on a project there that has been slow going for several years. Having new puppies in the house has given me more of an excuse to spend time at the museum, since I can work there with them without too much trouble. I have a nice dog bed and some favorite toys and soft blankets for them to snuggle with - when they're not on my lap, of course.

I think Topper can sleep just about anywhere. Both pups have enjoyed the adventures, and I do believe it's good for both of them to have some time without their sibling. The evening reunion is definitely worth it all, too.

Hmmmm, that does look like fun. Maybe I should venture over there just to taste the ball.

Luna and Topper:

Yum! Slimy, wet, yucky tennis ball. The best treat in the back yard, except for all the other yucky and slimy things we can dig out of the wood pile.

Slurp, chew, lick, bite, gnaw - YUM!

Emma:

You do realize I'm only lending these balls to you, right? They really are mine, but I'm willing to let you have my rejects. But, only for a little while. Enjoy them while you can.

Topper:

No! They're both mine! You can't have one - I want them both.

Luna:

Oh yeah? Well, I'll bite your ear off!

Topper:

Go ahead and try! I'll bite your foot off!

Topper:

My name is Topper - that means I get to be top dog sometimes!

Yesterday was a very special mother's day for Emma's mom. Our two new puppies, Luna and Topper, came home, and it's caused quite a stir in Emma's home.

The puppies didn't sleep at all on the trip home from the breeder's. They were excited and had to spend some time exploring the house when they arrived. Thus, when they needed a nap, they totally crashed.

This is Topper, our male chocolate and tan miniature dachshund puppy. ZZZZZZZ!

"Mom! How could you??????? Who are these puppies, and why are they here? I thought we were just visiting them the other day. You never told me they were coming to MY HOUSE! When are they going home????"

"What do you mean, this IS their home? This is MY home!"

"Ok, squirts, here are the house rules. I'm only going to tell you once, and you better not forget them or you'll be sorry!"

"1. I'm in charge."
"2. My toys are mine. Not yours. Mine!"
"3. If I was playing with a toy at any time in the past, it's mine."
"4. If you're playing with a toy and I want it, it's mine."
"5. Mom's lap is mine."
"6. Dad's lap is mine."
"7. All the laps in the house are mine. It doesn't matter that I can't sit in them all at the same time. They're mine. All mine."

"Geez! I can't believe my people would do this to me. What did I ever do to deserve twins?"

"Topper, do you think she really means it?"

"Nah, sis, I think she's just being cranky. She'll come around, don't worry."

"I don't know, Topper. She looks pretty serious about those toys. Look, she's sitting on top of her dragon's hoard."

"Luna, stop worrying! She's not going to be able to guard everything, and we can team up on her to take some of them for ourselves. You'll see."

"I really want her to be my big sister. She looks like such a nice doggie."

Luna and Topper shouldn't worry too much. Emma IS a nice dog, and she's going to have a lot of fun with you.

Our first day was pretty fun and the puppies slept very well last night. Emma has accepted them without too much fuss, although she is having to chase after her toys when the puppies are awake.

We visited the puppies again yesterday morning. This time with the entire family and Emma. She was so much more relaxed this time, and got along with all the puppies, except for rascally Carver. He just was too rambunctious for Emma.

We all enjoyed the visit and playing with the puppies. Topper was again pretty engaging and seemed to be attached to us. When he crawled onto Emma, who was in my lap, and then proceeded to fall asleep right next to her, and Emma let him, we all thought he was just too cute. So, after some serious family discussions about the challenges in raising two puppies, we've decided to adopt both Luna and Topper. We'll be a three-dachshund family, beginning next week! I'm sure the entertainment factor of having three dachshunds in the family will make for some great blog posts. Wild rumpus, indeed!

Yesterday we drove out to Marysville to visit Waggin' Tails Miniature Dachshunds and to meet Luna Pi at last. She turns seven weeks old this Sunday.

Emma was very hesitant and unsure about the puppies for the first half hour of our visit. Afterwards, though, she was very curious, but still somewhat unsure about what to think of these five pups. In this picture she's getting acquainted with Luna Pi. Luna didn't seem too bothered by Emma's intrusion or dominance behavior.

In fact, Luna was pretty inquisitive about everything in the big outdoors as this was the first time the puppies had been outside, and the first time they had met a "strange" dog or new people. It was also the first time Luna had seen a big camera. I had my Canon 7D with me and turned it around to get her picture while she was on my lap. I love this picture of her.

As soon as Luna was in my lap, Emma had to be there too. They spent quite a few minutes sniffing each other's ears.

Luna has really beautiful ears. Her coloring is Isabella and Tan, which reminds me of a Weimaraner. Thus, I will always think of Luna as a Weimarweiner!

Luna has four brothers, three of which are in this picture. L to R: "Topper," Carver, and "Darby." Topper and Darby have not yet been placed. Both are adorable.

Topper (chocolate and tan) loves to play and really took a shine to me.

Carver is in the process of chewing my shoe - hey that's my toe you're biting!

Darby is a dapple Isabella and Tan. He's very handsome and very calm. You should contact Waggin' Tails if you're interested in adopting either of these gents. I wish I had more room at my place. I think Topper would be a fun pup to have around and he's the softest smooth coat I've ever met.

This is Winchester. He's the only longhaired puppy in the litter. He is soooooo mellow, too. He spent most of the visit snoozing.

It was so fun to watch the puppies romp and then take a nap. Luna's checking the action before succumbing to a nap.

Emma went around and checked the puppies while they were napping. Carver just rolled over and submitted to Emma whenever she got too nosy.

Emma did not like having her ears sniffed by the pups. She let them know when they had overstepped her boundaries. If looks could kill, these pups would have been in serious trouble.

Must take nap! I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the puppies and meeting Luna. We're going to visit again tomorrow morning.

Luna Pi is now three weeks old. It looks like she's a smooth coat. That will give her an unfair advantage when it comes to play time with Emma. Luna will be able to grab Emma's long ears, but Emma won't have that long hair to snag in return.

Snow! Emma LOVES snow!

She spent the morning chasing squirrels while playing in the snow, which was deeper than she is tall. She had to hop through it, which was very cute.

When she finally came inside she was a dogsicle. She had little ice balls caught in her long hair on her belly, legs, ears and tail. I thawed her out in the kitchen and then gave her a treat. She wanted to go right back outside, of course.

Christmas morning is always fun with Emma around. She really, really loves to find her new toys. This particular Christmas holds dear memories for us as it was Darwin's last one. He passed away on New Year's Day 2010 at the ripe old age of 12 3/4. We'll really miss him and Emma has been lonely without him.

No, this was not our Emma today. However, she did have a fantastic Christmas, starting with the anticipation of opening her presents. We went to the extra effort this year of keeping her gifts in the car so her snoot wouldn't be working overtime (i.e., she wouldn't be whining and fussing constantly for days on end that she wanted her toys!).

The said toys were retrieved from the car after Emma was put to bed last night. It took only seconds for her to notice the smell of fresh latex toys. That was the end of her time in our bed - she had to be kenneled for the night. Poor, poor Emma!

This morning she had to be fenced off in the kitchen while we waited for everyone to be ready for Christmas morning. She was sooooooo unhappy to be in there when she could smell her toys. At last the gate was opened and she went right to her toy bag. I did shoot some video footage, but haven't had time to process it today. I'll post it as soon as I can - promise!

The rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks and birds are having a great time nesting and taking up residence in the yard. I like to sniff them out to see if I can find and chase them. Sometimes I catch them, too.

What to do, what to do? My mom's been away a lot this past six months and I'm stuck at home wondering when she's going to come back to play with me again.

I miss my mom when she's away, but I always forgive her - after spending about 30 minutes letting her have it right in the kisser.

How can she leave me for weeks at a time? I'm so adorable!

Oh well, there's nothing to do for it except nap, snooze and dream of that next squeaky toy.

after ducks, that is. We were out walking after some of the pond ice thawed and Emma spotted some ducks out on the water.

If she hadn't been on a leash, I'm sure she would have been swimming after them. She waded out to where she would have had to start swimming, but I didn't feel like plunging in after her.

Emma learns to swim - by accident!

We took Emma kayaking on Hoover Reservoir, putting in at the boat launch at Oxbow. Last weekend she was very good about sitting in my lap and just taking in the sights and smells of the lake. This evening she wanted to touch the water and was really restless. I finally stopped paddling to see what she would do. She tried to lean over the side, but wouldn't jump in so I dangled her feet in the water while holding onto the handle of her harness. Then she crawled out onto the bow and walked around a bit until she slipped off. What a splashy surprise. She came up sputtering a bit. It was a good thing she was hooked into me by leash. I was able to reel her back to the kayak and scoop her back into my lap.

Of course, you know what happens when a dog is wet. I got several showers.

Emma ended up going into the lake three times. The first couple of times she seemed a bit scared. The last time she was pretty calm and just swam back to where I could pick her up and put her back in the boat. We know her PFD works, though. That last time she ended up doing a back flip and was completely submerged. She popped right back to the surface like a cork bobbing in the water.

Look! Mom got a new kayak and she took me out with her to see how I would like it.

I have my very own PFD (personal floatation device), too! Mom hooked a leash to my PFD and attached it to herself so I couldn't get lost if I jumped overboard.

I was really interested in everything! I sat in Mom's lap, but moved from side to side to see everything there was to see. I wanted to catch the birds that were out on the water. We saw ducks, gulls, and cormorants on the water and an osprey, kingfisher, and shorebirds.

Mom told me to sit still and I did, but when I saw the package of Doritos on the water, I just about made it overboard. I got dribbled on from the water dripping off the paddles, but otherwise I stayed dry. What a fun way to spend an evening!

Mom's Solo CD is released!

Mom started working on a solo CD project last February and finished the recording in May. Add a few weeks for processing and printing, and the project is finally done. The CD's have arrived and will make their official debut at the Dublin Irish Festival (DIF) next week. You can hear some of the tracks at Mom's MySpace Page. There are 14 tracks and 76+ minutes of music on this CD.

(Emma's contributions were in chewing up the bodhran tipper prior to recording, plus looking so adorable on the liner notes portrait.)

Snow Dog '08!

This weekend is the big blizzard of 2008! We had 20 inches of snow fall today, and it was wonderful!

I'm a SNOW DOG today!

The tricky part is to get my owners to throw snow at me so I can catch it and be covered up in it from head to toe!

Daddard is outside the fence using the snow blower. He can't hear me whining for snow when that machine is running.

All I can do is watch him blowing snow. I have to wait for him to fetch the shovel.

Poor Emma - we've been so busy this summer that she's not been the center of attention 24/7. We have been going to her favorite park for long walks, though, and she really looks forward to each trip. All I have to do is grab my car keys and she thinks it's time for her walk in the park.

While I'm driving, she sits in Steve's lap and watches all the action on the road. Every so often she spots a squirrel or rabbit and goes into hunt mode, and she sniffs the air coming through the vent trying to get the scent.

Oooooops! I thought all the critters in the yard were fair game for eating. Little did I know that bees bite back!

It's ok - no worries. I only had a swollen snoot for a day. Mom and Dadard called the vet and she told them to give me 10 mg of Benadryl every eight hours until the swelling went down. It worked like a charm.
